Years ago, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan recounted an incident from his early career when he was jailed after a confrontation with a journalist. The event, which occurred shortly after his marriage to Gauri Khan, was triggered by a false report in a magazine.
Speaking at Tehelka's "Think 2012" event, Shah Rukh Khan explained that a magazine had published a story suggesting he was romantically involved with a co-star. The report deeply upset his wife, Gauri. "I had just got married," Khan recalled, "and this was very difficult for my wife, whom I had known since she was 14."
The actor admitted that his anger led him to the journalist's house, carrying a kukri (a type of knife) gifted to him by his father-in-law. There, he confronted the people present. "I behaved really badly, and I was jailed for it," he confessed, acknowledging how inappropriate his actions were.
Khan remembered that the police arrived the next day while he was on the set of the film "Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa." Since he was taken into custody after 6 p.m., he could not secure immediate bail.
He also shared that he was allowed one phone call from the lock-up. Instead of contacting his lawyer or family, he called the person he had confronted and threatened him again. The original text mentions that fellow actor Nana Patekar helped get him out of jail, but Khan's retelling at the event did not include the details of how Patekar assisted him.
Looking back, Shah Rukh Khan acknowledged his poor behavior during the incident, attributing it to his youth and anger.
