Local Taliban officials in Baghlan province have announced the start of reconstruction and repair work on 60 kilometers of the Pul-e-Khumri-Kunduz highway. This project aims to improve the condition of one of the most important transit routes in the north of the country.
Abdul Khaliq Haqmal, the Taliban's head of Public Works in Baghlan, stated in a press release that the project includes patching and reconstructing damaged sections of the road. It is being funded with a budget of over 17 million Afghanis from the Directorate of Public Works.
According to him, the project is scheduled to be completed and opened to traffic within three months. The Baghlan-Kunduz highway not only connects the provincial capital of Baghlan to Kunduz but also serves as the main route from Kabul to the northern and northeastern provinces such as Takhar, Badakhshan, and the Sher Khan Bandar border crossing.
Over many years of war and due to a lack of proper maintenance, the road had become severely damaged. The poor condition of the road caused traffic slowdowns, an increase in accidents, and vehicle wear and tear, and was a constant complaint from drivers and travelers.
The head of Public Works in Baghlan emphasized that with the completion of this project, transportation problems on this route will be significantly reduced, facilitating trade and public movement. This project is part of the Taliban government's efforts to rebuild the country's infrastructure.
Local residents and drivers have welcomed the start of the project and hope that the reconstruction will be done properly and to a high standard to avoid facing the same road deterioration issues in the near future.
