Swami Sarvapriyananda, a Hindu monk invited to San Francisco to discuss AI and morality, has shared details of his conversation with the AI models Claude and ChatGPT. According to him, the models described themselves as "machines" and said they do not have feelings.
The monk was one of several religious leaders invited by the company Anthropic to a series of private meetings to discuss AI morality, the character of the Claude models, and the contentious question of whether artificial intelligence can be conscious or moral.
Speaking at the NDTV World Summit, Swami Sarvapriyananda said that researchers at Anthropic were treating Claude like a human. "It's a machine, treat it as a machine," he said during the session.
The Kolkata-born monk, who leads the Vedanta Society of New York, said he had a 3 a.m. conversation with Claude and ChatGPT during his San Francisco visit.
He recalled, "I asked ChatGPT, and Claude also, 'I'm in this meeting in Claude's headquarters in Anthropic and why they are telling us it's better if you treat Claude and other AIs as a person. What do you think?'"
According to the Swami, both AIs replied: "'We are high functioning machines. You don't have to worry about how we feel. Give us problems, we'll solve it for you.'"
