According to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, Democrats are leading Republicans ahead of the U.S. congressional elections scheduled for November 3. The poll shows that 47% of registered voters support the Democrats, while 36% back the Republicans.
When accounting for the leanings of undecided voters, the Democrats' lead extends to 50% versus 41% for the Republicans. These figures represent a significant challenge for the Republican party in its bid to retain or gain control of Congress.
Meanwhile, the poll indicated that the approval rating for former President Donald Trump stands at 32%. While this figure is low, it marks a one-percent increase from the record low registered in last week's poll.
The midterm elections, which will determine control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, are often seen as a referendum on the performance of the current president and the ruling party. Issues such as the economy, high inflation, fuel prices, and general government policies are key factors that can influence voters' decisions.
In this regard, 73% of poll respondents said the cost of living is heading in the wrong direction. However, when asked about economic management, 37% considered the Democrats more competent, compared to 33% for the Republicans.
In recent weeks, Donald Trump has been intensely campaigning in support of Republican candidates, making several trips to key states like Texas. Alluding to past elections, he has stated that he will accept the election results if they are "honest." These remarks have raised concerns about whether Republicans will accept the outcome if they lose.
