Afghan Female Hairdressers Face Severe Economic Crisis
Afghan female hairdressers have encountered severe economic difficulties following the Taliban’s ban on their activities in 2023. Many of these women, who were breadwinners for their families, now struggle to provide daily meals and some are forced to work secretly from home.
According to statistics from Afghanistan’s Chamber of Artisans and Shopkeepers, approximately 12,000 beauty salons across the country were closed, affecting nearly 50,000 women who worked in them. One hairdresser from Herat province, who managed three salons, reports being arrested three times for continuing her work.
These restrictions, implemented under Mulla Hibatullah Akhundzada’s decree, are part of broader prohibitions against Afghan women, including banning education beyond sixth grade. This situation has sparked domestic and international reactions, raising concerns about Afghanistan’s future under Taliban rule.
