Following widespread anti-corruption protests and the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Sushila Karki, former Chief Justice, was appointed as Nepal’s first female interim leader.
President Ramchandra Paudel’s office announced that this appointment came after negotiations between the president, army commander, and protesters.
The violent protests, Nepal’s most severe unrest in recent years, have resulted in 51 deaths and over 1,300 injuries so far.
The Gen Z movement, primarily composed of young people, led the protests which began with the blocking of social media networks.
Karki, 73 years old and the only woman to serve as Chief Justice to date, was the protesters’ preferred choice due to her reputation for integrity and anti-corruption stance.
Protesters set fire to the parliament building and the office of the country’s largest party, and attacked homes of several prominent politicians.
