Amid rising tensions between China and Japan, the United States has, for the first time, criticized Beijing for targeting Tokyo’s bombers with radar.

On Tuesday, December 9, a US State Department spokesperson condemned China’s action as a threat to regional peace and stability, stressing America’s strong alliance with Japan.

Tensions escalated after Chinese fighter jets aimed their radar at Japanese aircraft, marking the most serious military confrontation in East Asia in recent years.

In response, China claimed that Japanese flights interfered with its declared naval exercises.

Japan also recently reported joint patrols by Chinese and Russian warplanes near its borders and deployed its own jets for monitoring.

The tensions surged following the Japanese Prime Minister’s pledge to support Taiwan militarily in the event of a Chinese attack.
