The Wall Street Journal reported that the Pentagon has deployed the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, consisting of approximately 2,200 personnel, to the Middle East. This rapid response unit could be employed within potential scenarios to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the report, one option under consideration is the temporary seizure of one or more strategic Iranian islands near the Strait of Hormuz. This action could be used as leverage to force Tehran to stop attacks against commercial shipping.
The unit, stationed aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, has the capability to conduct amphibious and airborne operations. Islands such as Kharg, Qeshm, Kish, and Hormuz could be potential targets of such operations.
