The Afghan Journalists Center reported the release of Mahdi Ansari, an Afghan journalist, from Bagram prison. Ansari, who was sentenced to one and a half years in prison for allegedly cooperating with Afghan media abroad, completed his sentence and was released last night. He was freed around 8 PM from Bagram prison and reunited with his family in Kabul.

The Afghan Journalists Center's statement says this journalist's fundamental rights were seriously violated. Mahdi Ansari disappeared on October 6th after returning from his office in the Pul-e-Khushk area of Kabul, and his family confirmed three days later that he had been detained by Taliban intelligence.

He was sentenced on January 2, 2025, by the Kabul primary court on charges of propaganda against the Taliban administration to one and a half years in prison. The Afghan Journalists Center has stated that this journalist was convicted unfairly without an independent defense lawyer.
