The International Organization for Migration reported that growing economic hardships and strict migration policies in Iran have significantly increased the return of Afghan migrants. By sharing the story of 19-year-old Zainab and 17-year-old Ali, the organization highlighted the severe difficulties forcing long-term refugees to leave their host country.
Born in Iran, the siblings lost their father in a workplace accident, leaving them unable to finalize their legal residency status. Consequently, they were forced to drop out of school and work to support themselves. Zainab worked as a tailor, while Ali became an electrician to survive.
After Ali was severely injured in an attack by men on a motorcycle, the siblings decided to return to Afghanistan early this year. The International Organization for Migration assisted over 293,000 returnees last year, providing essential support as they face an uncertain future and severe economic challenges back home.
