Prominent women's rights defenders have strongly described the European Union's engagement with the Taliban as a massive disgrace.
Human Rights Watch researchers have condemned this European move as blatant hypocrisy, pointing out that the EU denounces human rights abuses while simultaneously granting the group political prestige. Furthermore, the Association of Afghan Women Leaders has urgently called for an end to normalizing gender apartheid.
While European officials described the meeting as purely technical and strictly limited to migration issues, the Taliban government views it as a positive step for consular services. The UN Special Rapporteur also called these talks a direct insult to the Afghan people, particularly women.
