Local sources report that the Taliban Justice Minister detained around twenty Shiite citizens in western Kabul over the hoisting of Muharram flags. The individuals were reportedly held in a private prison for several days before being released.
Following their release, the minister issued a strict warning to residents, forbidding the use of flags and loudspeakers at mosques and public gathering places. Local community elders have attempted to negotiate with authorities to lift these sudden restrictions, but they have yet to receive any positive response.
The Taliban government has increasingly restricted religious observances for the Shiite community in recent years. Although a prior agreement allowed flags on mosques, the new directive bans them entirely, leading to heightened tensions in the area.
