Taliban government officials confirmed that over 340 Afghan citizens have been released from various prisons in Pakistan this week. These individuals were primarily detained due to their lack of legal residency documents in the neighboring country.
According to the Ministry of Refugees, the returnees include both families and single individuals who crossed back into Afghanistan via the Torkham and Spin Boldak border crossings. Just last week, nearly 500 other Afghan migrants were also released and returned home.
Pakistan has significantly intensified its crackdown and deportation of undocumented Afghan migrants since late last year. International humanitarian organizations continue to warn about the dire economic conditions and lack of basic services facing these massive waves of returnees.
