The World Food Programme (WFP) warned that Afghanistan's hunger crisis has reached a critical stage, with 14 million people facing acute food insecurity. Due to severe funding shortfalls, only one in nine people in need receives food aid.
WFP Afghanistan Director John Aylieff said the forced return of nearly six million Afghans from Iran and Pakistan since September 2023 has placed enormous pressure on the country's fragile economy. Border tensions with Pakistan have also driven up food prices by 20 to 30 percent.
The agency warned that severe wasting has reached crisis levels in one-third of Afghanistan's provinces, with 80 percent of the most critical malnutrition cases involving children under two. At least $500 million in emergency funding is urgently needed.
