Sony has announced the introduction of a new artificial intelligence (AI) upscaling technology for its standard PlayStation 5 (PS5) console. The technology, dubbed Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), is designed to enhance gaming graphics on the regular PS5 model.
According to a blog post from the company, QSSR, which is part of Sony's "Project Amethyst" partnership with AMD, delivers a "new performance tier of AI upscaling." This technology enables standard PS5 consoles to upscale game visuals to a 1440p resolution, marking a significant improvement in visual quality.
However, QSSR is not as fast as its counterpart, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which is available on the more advanced PS5 Pro. The reason for this difference is that the regular PS5 lacks dedicated machine learning silicon. Consequently, while the Pro model can upscale games to 4K, the standard model will be limited to upscaled 1440p.
According to Digital Foundry, a respected source for gaming tech analysis, developers who have already implemented PSSR in their games can easily integrate QSSR. However, they might need to adjust parameters such as texture streaming and resolution targets to achieve optimal results.
Currently, "Marvel's Wolverine" and "Ghost of Yotei" are the first titles to support this new technology, with patches released for them on the day of the announcement. This indicates Sony is encouraging developers to adopt the new feature.
It is important to note that QSSR is not a system-wide feature that applies automatically to all games. Instead, it is a per-game feature, and its adoption depends entirely on developers' decisions to support it through patches or native implementation. Therefore, the technology's rollout will be gradual, relying on the support of game studios.
