Russia's Foreign Ministry has announced that Moscow is closely monitoring the security situation on the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border and will continue its military and technical support to Dushanbe to enhance border security. These remarks come amid rising concerns over the activities of extremist groups in northern Afghanistan.

Alexander Sternik, a department director at the Russian Foreign Ministry, told RIA Novosti on Monday, October 5, that securing the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border is always a key focus for Moscow. He emphasized that the delivery of military and technical equipment to Tajikistan continues based on joint programs.

This assistance is being provided within the framework of a Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) intergovernmental program, approved in 2024 to fortify the Tajik-Afghan border, as well as a program to modernize Tajikistan's armed forces by 2042.

The Russian diplomat added that Russian security agencies are continuously supplying technical equipment and weaponry to Tajikistan's border forces. This action is a response to recent instability in Afghanistan's Badakhshan province and oader concerns among Central Asian countries about terrorist threats emanating from Afghan soil, particularly from ISIS-Khorasan.

Previously, CSTO Secretary-General Talatbek Masadykov had also expressed concern about the border situation, stating that the first shipments of weapons to strengthen Tajikistan's border would be delivered this autumn. He had stressed that Russia plays the primary role in providing this equipment.

The CSTO chief also highlighted the need to expedite the process of fortifying the Tajik border, warning that any security problem in this region could quickly spread to other member states of the organization.

Concurrently, Russia's Defense Minister had also announced that the country's military bases in Tajikistan have been placed on full alert to counter any potential threats from the direction of Afghanistan.
