Dawood Safi, a 28-year-old Afghan asylum seeker in the UK, has been sentenced to an indefinite stay in a psychiatric hospital after killing a man with a knife. The judge stated that Safi was suffering from "psychosis" at the time of the attack and recommended he be deported from the UK.
On October 27 of last year, Safi first attacked his landlord before going into the street and attacking a 49-year-old man who was walking his dog, stabbing him 14 times. The victim, who worked for the local Ealing Council, died from his injuries. A 14-year-old was also wounded in the attack.
The court heard that Safi's mental state had severely deteriorated before the attack and he imagined his family was conspiring against him. The prosecutor said the victim was passing by coincidence and there was no prior animosity between the two.
The victim's family had pushed for a murder trial, but the prosecution accepted Safi's plea of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, based on medical evidence.
Safi also pleaded guilty to attempting to murder his landlord, wounding the 14-year-old, and possessing a prohibited weapon.
According to information presented in court, Safi arrived in the UK in 2020 claiming to be 17 years old and was granted asylum in 2022.
