More than 120 Afghan Refugees Still Stranded in Brazil’s Guarulhos Airport
At least 122 Afghan refugees who fled to Brazil on humanitarian visas after the fall of Kabul to the Taliban are still stranded in Guarulhos Airport in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, more than two years after their arrival.
The Agência Brasil news agency reported that the refugees are waiting to be relocated from the airport to permanent housing. According to the report, food and medical care are being provided to the refugees by aid organizations.
Brazilian authorities have said that the shelters that have been identified do not have the capacity to accommodate more refugees.
The refugees are from all walks of life, including families with children, single women, and men. They fled Afghanistan after the Taliban took control of the country in August 2021.
Many of the refugees are concerned about their future in Brazil. They say that they are struggling to learn Portuguese and find jobs. They are also worried about being deported back to Afghanistan, where they could face persecution by the Taliban. The Brazilian government has said that it is working to find permanent housing for the refugees. However, the process is taking longer than expected.
