Hungarian President Katalin Nowak has resigned a week after it was revealed that he pardoned a man convicted of child sexual abuse.
Previously, the people protesting the president’s decision demanded his resignation and the Hungarian justice minister’s resignation, which they both did.
A man pardoned by Mrs. Nowak was convicted and served three years in prison in a case where he covered up the sexual abuse of children in an orphanage.
This man’s name was published in the media last week among the list of 25 people pardoned by the Hungarian president.
After this incident, the Hungarian Prime Minister presented a new constitutional amendment to the parliament last Thursday, which removes the right to pardon crimes committed against children from the president’s powers.
