Statements by the Defense Minister of Pakistan regarding the Taliban

Khawaja Asif, the Minister of Defense of Pakistan, despite his harsh criticism of the Afghan Taliban, said on Wednesday that he does not regret his famous statements and tweets about the victory of the Taliban against the government of Ashraf Ghani.

He said that “the conquest of Kabul by the Taliban is still commendable.

“Mr. Asif, after the victory of the Taliban, on the 22nd of September 1400, posted a photo of Mullah Baradar and Mike Pompeo, the former US Secretary of State, on Twitter and wrote:

“The power is with you, but God is with us.” Allah is great.

“In an interview with Geonews, Pakistan’s Defense Minister emphasized that he still stands by his profession.

Referring to the Afghan Taliban, he said that they defeated a superpower without the support of major powers.

Pakistan was one of the main supporters of the Taliban in the war against the former government and Western forces in Afghanistan. The past governments of Afghanistan accused Pakistan of supporting and sheltering the leaders and commanders of the Taliban.

Analysts believe that without the possibilities and support of Pakistan, the victory of the Taliban against the Afghan government would have been very difficult. They believe that the Pakistan Army was supporting the Afghan Taliban because of Kabul’s proximity to Delhi.

Pakistani officials, including Khawaja Asif, have repeatedly criticized the Afghan Taliban’s support for the Pakistani Taliban, a group that has now become a security problem for Islamabad.
