Fawzia Koofi, a former member of the Afghan Parliament and a prominent women’s rights advocate, has been awarded the prestigious Asian Women of Achievement Award for 2024. The award recognizes her tireless efforts in supporting the rights of women in Afghanistan, particularly in the wake of the Taliban’s takeover of the country.

During the award ceremony in London, Ms. Koofi highlighted the dire situation faced by women in Afghanistan, stating, “Afghanistan has turned into an open prison for women. This situation is not normal and should not be accepted as such.” She also emphasized the importance of supporting the resistance of Afghan women and amplifying their voices to bring about change.The Asian Women of Achievement Award, established in 1999 by Pinky Lilani, a writer and women’s rights advocate, is presented annually to outstanding women from Asia in various fields. The award acknowledges the crucial role women play in the advancement of Asian societies and celebrates their achievements.
