U.S. President Joe Biden announced that American troops stationed in the region will address threats emanating from Afghanistan.
In a letter to Congress, Biden said the United States has deployed armed combat forces in several locations within the areas of responsibility of the U.S. Central Command to counter al-Qaeda and ISIS. He emphasized that U.S. military personnel are deployed outside Afghanistan to address threats that may originate from within Afghanistan.
The U.S. president also stressed the continuation of a limited presence of forces in Syria and Iraq to prevent the resurgence of ISIS, and an increase in forces in Saudi Arabia to counter the threat of Iranian-backed Houthis.
Biden said that at the request of Jordan and Lebanon, additional forces will also be sent to these countries. These statements come as the disastrous U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, which led to the Taliban’s resurgence and increased threat of terrorism, has been consistently criticized.
