Rahmatullah Nabil, a prominent Afghan politician, expressed concern over the silence of US State Department officials regarding the exclusion of Afghan women from participating in the third round of the Doha meeting.
On Monday, July 15th, Nabil took to his Twitter account, calling on Rina Amiri, the US Special Representative for Afghan Women, to take a stance on this issue or resign. He emphasized that defending the rights of Afghan women is part of the responsibilities of the US representative for Afghan women’s affairs.
The third round of the Doha meeting is set to be hosted by the United Nations in Qatar in the coming week. Representatives of Afghan women and civil society will not participate in the main meeting attended by representatives of the Taliban group. The Taliban had previously threatened to boycott the meeting if changes were made to the agenda.
The UN spokesperson said that the issue of human rights, especially women’s rights, will be highlighted at the Doha meeting. Diplomatic sources told Afghanistan International that the US and several major Western countries have objected to the exclusion of women from this meeting and have called for their presence.
