In the first presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, the candidates for the 2024 U.S. presidential election, the two nominees fiercely clashed over foreign policy issues, particularly Afghanistan and Ukraine.
During the debate, Trump called the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan under Biden’s presidency a “disaster” and claimed that Putin was encouraged to invade Ukraine after witnessing this action. He said that Biden actually encouraged Russia to attack Ukraine.
In response, Biden said, “I’ve never heard such nonsense in my life.”
The 90-minute debate was held without an audience at the CNN studio. At 81 and 78 years old respectively, Biden and Trump are the oldest candidates in the history of U.S. presidential elections.
Polls indicate that Trump has more support on issues like the economy and immigration, while Biden leads on matters such as abortion, healthcare, and the environment. Trump is expected to focus on the inflation problem during Biden’s tenure. The likely winner of the debate will be the one who can effectively present their strengths and defend their weaknesses.
