The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs announced the appointment of Amanda McGregor as the country’s new Special Representative for Afghanistan. Ms. McGregor, who has experience serving in Afghanistan, Jordan, and Kuwait, will carry out her mission from Qatar.

On Wednesday (July 4), Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized that her country will continue to work with like-minded countries to address human rights violations and support women and girls in Afghanistan. Australia is committed to providing $71 million in support for Afghan women and girls and delivering humanitarian assistance from 2023 to 2024.

Amanda McGregor replaces Glenn Miles, Australia’s former Special Representative for Afghanistan. Since the Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan, the group’s policies towards women and girls have repeatedly faced criticism from Australia and other countries. So far, no country has recognized the Taliban.
