U.S. and Uzbekistan Agree: Afghan Military Aircraft to Stay Put
Jonathan Henick, the U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan, announced on Monday, August 26, that Washington and Tashkent have reached an agreement regarding the fate of former Afghan military aircraft.
Henick clarified that these 46 planes and helicopters were always U.S. property, merely used by the Afghan army.
According to the deal, the aircraft will remain in Uzbekistan. This decision comes despite the Taliban’s claims of ownership and demands for their return to Afghanistan.
The aircraft were flown to Uzbekistan by Afghan pilots following the collapse of the republic system in Afghanistan.
