Iranian cultural heritage officials have announced that the UNESCO global registration process for traditional windmills is reaching its final stages. This historical monument is scheduled to be jointly registered by Afghanistan and Iran as a shared world heritage site.
Alireza Izadi, an Iranian official, stated that the preparation of this dossier began seven years ago. He emphasized that the vision was always to make it a joint registration to involve both nations and expand the cultural impact of this shared history.
These traditional windmills are primarily located in the eastern regions of Iran and the western provinces of Afghanistan, particularly in Herat. Officials hope that UNESCO evaluators will begin their final assessments for this joint registration next year.
