India-Canada Diplomatic Crisis Deepens Over Khalistani Activist’s Murder

On Monday, October 14, 2024, tensions between India and Canada reached a new high as India withdrew its top diplomat from Ottawa amid an escalating row over the assassination of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This dramatic move comes after Canadian authorities declared multiple Indian diplomats as “persons of interest” in the murder investigation.

The diplomatic crisis began when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged “credible” involvement of Indian government agents in Nijjar’s killing on Canadian soil. India vehemently rejected these accusations, calling them baseless and politically motivated.

In response to Canada’s allegations, India has not only recalled its High Commissioner but also expelled six Canadian diplomats. Furthermore, New Delhi has demanded that Canada withdraw around 40 of its diplomats by October 10, setting a clear deadline and issuing a warning.

This diplomatic standoff has plunged India-Canada relations to their lowest point in years, with potential far-reaching consequences for bilateral ties, trade, and the large Indian diaspora in Canada. As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, hoping for a de-escalation of tensions between these two major democracies.
