Political Analyst Jawed Kohistani Released After 20 Days in Taliban Custody
Jawed Kohistani, a political analyst, has been released after 20 days of detention by the Taliban group in Kabul. Kohistani’s family members confirmed to the media that he was freed from prison on Tuesday, (October 15) However, the exact reason for his arrest and the conditions of his release remain unclear, with the Taliban group yet to comment on the matter.
Kohistani was detained by Taliban intelligence on 4 Mizan (September 26) in the Sarai Shamali area of Kabul. This action is part of the Taliban group’s ongoing pattern of arrests targeting civil activists, academics, and political analysts since their return to power in Afghanistan.
Prior to Kohistani’s release, human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, had called for his immediate freedom The Union of Activists had also urged the UN Human Rights Council to prioritize Kohistani’s release
