Ismail Yun, a former Kabul University professor, stated in an interview with Afghanistan International that “bomb-makers should not be higher education ministers.” The former Pashto department professor emphasized that Afghanistan does not belong solely to mullahs and gives the Taliban a zero score in education.

Nadamohammad Nadim, the Taliban’s current higher education minister, is a 47-year-old Kandahar province native who has only received religious education from various madrassas. He previously served as governor of Nangarhar and Kabul but has no modern educational background.

Mr. Yun further criticized the Taliban for appointing unqualified individuals to lead the higher education ministry and converting Kabul University into a religious school. The closure of university doors to female students is among the most controversial decisions implemented during Nadim’s leadership.
