Reuters reports a sharp rise in targeted attacks against Syria’s Alawite community, to which former president Bashar al-Assad belongs. On March 6, 2025, masked men raided Alawite homes in Damascus’ Al-Qadam neighborhood, abducting over 20 unarmed men in what appears to be part of widening sectarian violence.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has documented deteriorating security conditions in Syria’s western coastal regions. According to reports, recent clashes between the new government’s security forces and Assad’s Alawite supporters have resulted in more than 1,000 casualties, signaling a dangerous escalation in communal tensions.

Victims of these attacks are predominantly elderly individuals and some with congenital disabilities. In one particularly disturbing case, four members of a single family were killed in Damascus, while a relative managed to survive by hiding upstairs with young children, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the violence.
