The Taliban’s Ministry of Virtue and Vice warned on Monday, May 12, 2025, that social media users will face prosecution for “immoral” usage.
Saifullah Islam, the ministry’s spokesman, announced in an audio message to the Taliban-controlled national television that the ministry is closely monitoring social media activities.
He emphasized that social media users are not permitted to publish or distribute immoral and illegitimate content. Saifullah Islam added: “The Ministry of Virtue and Vice will pursue all user accounts that deviate public opinion.”
These warnings come as the Taliban group has repeatedly detained and tortured critics on social media since regaining control of Afghanistan.
These actions have raised serious concerns about freedom of expression and digital rights for Afghans.
