The 4th Industry Week Exhibition kicked off on May 27 at the Afghanistan International Exhibition Center in Kabul and will run until June 1.
Taliban group’s Minister of Economy, Din Mohammad Hanif, described Afghanistan as a consumer country, saying even prayer beads and turbans are imported.
He and other Taliban officials called on Afghan and foreign investors to boost local industry, promising to simplify bureaucracy and reduce corruption to support domestic production.
The exhibition features 700 booths showcasing handicrafts, carpets, beverages, and home appliances. Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, stressed the need for self-sufficiency and prioritizing industrial parks across provinces. However, women were not allowed to participate in this event.
Hanif said Afghanistan will only achieve self-reliance if all Afghan traders work with the Taliban administration. He called the country an “untapped market” with 16 million workers but admitted that poverty and unemployment are driving young people to migrate.
