Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Thursday, May 29, that during his visit to Berlin, he met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and discussed equipping the Ukrainian army with German Taurus cruise missiles.

According to a report from Ukrainian news agency RBK-Ukraine, Zelenskyy stated that these discussions about acquiring Taurus missiles took place behind closed doors.

Germany has been one of Ukraine’s key supporters, working in various ways to defend Kyiv against Russia.

The European nation has provided significant military and economic aid to Ukraine, but has remained cautious about supplying long-range Taurus missiles, which have been a point of contention in German politics for months.

Experts believe NATO member countries consider a Russian victory in the war against Ukraine a threat to their own security, which is why they continue to support Ukraine to the extent possible.

The Taurus cruise missiles, with a range of approximately 500 kilometers, could significantly enhance Ukraine’s defensive capabilities, though concerns remain about potential escalation of tensions with Russia if such weapons are deployed.
