Sources close to the Taliban group have confirmed that Abdul Rahman Khalid, son of Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, was killed in an accidental explosion in Helmand, contradicting the Taliban’s official claim.

Investigative reports reveal that Khalid was part of a suicide attack team known as the “Waiting Unit,” but died in an accidental explosion while attacking former security forces’ outposts.

The incident occurred on July 26, 2017, when Taliban fighters launched major attacks on security posts and bases of the former government in Gereshk district of Helmand province.

The attacks began with a car bomb that breached the district’s security wall, allowing Taliban fighters to capture several outposts. However, the “Bari” military base in Faqiro village continued to resist.

Taliban sources have now disclosed that Khalid was killed while placing explosives on the defensive wall of this base, contradicting their propaganda that he died in a suicide attack.
At the time, the Taliban described Khalid’s death as “martyrdom” and called him a “martyrdom-seeking fighter.

” Even Mullah Hibatullah, in a statement, characterized his son’s action as a “martyrdom-seeking attack in the way of God,” which helped strengthen his position among Taliban members. In August 2023, the Taliban’s Minister for Propagation of Virtue described Hibatullah as the “qibla of martyrdom-seekers” during a speech in Ghor province.
