The Netherlands and Germany have announced they have found evidence that Russia has been extensively using banned chemical weapons in the Ukraine war.

According to Reuters, intelligence agencies from Germany and the Netherlands reported that the Russian army uses drones to deploy choking gases into Ukrainian soldiers’ trenches, forcing them to abandon their positions and subsequently targeting them when they emerge.

Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans, in an interview with Reuters, called for stricter sanctions against Moscow and confirmed that “Russia has intensified its use of chemical weapons [in the Ukraine war].

” He added that this action is concerning as part of a trend observed in recent years, showing that Russia’s use of chemical weapons in this conflict has gradually become “more normalized, organized, and widespread.” Germany’s Federal Intelligence Agency also confirmed in a statement that these findings were obtained in cooperation with Dutch intelligence agencies.

The Russia-Ukraine war, which began in February 2022, continues to this day.

The United States first accused Russia of using the chemical substance chloropicrin in the Ukraine war in May 2025.

Donald Trump, the US President, recently expressed disappointment with Vladimir Putin’s position, saying it appears Putin has no intention of ending the Ukraine war.
