The Taliban governor’s office in Herat announced on Friday, July 4, 2025, that 38,000 Afghan migrants entered the province through the Islam Qala border crossing in a single day on Thursday.
The Taliban also claimed to have distributed approximately 39 million Afghanis to these returnees.
Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported that more than 43,000 migrants were deported from Iran on Tuesday alone.
According to the organization, the deportation of Afghan migrants has increased significantly following Israel’s attack on Iran.
Returnees at the Islam Qala camp have complained about the lack of basic necessities such as adequate shelter and food. UN aid agencies have called for financial assistance to address the situation of the returnees.
