Large parts of the Czech Republic’s power grid have experienced a widespread outage.
The national grid operator announced that a fallen high-voltage cable in northern Czech Republic caused a transmission line failure, leading to extensive blackouts across wider regions.
On Friday, July 13, 2025, Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan stated that there are currently no signs of a cyber or terrorist attack, with the main cause of the outage likely being a technical fault.
Reports indicate that various regions including Prague, Liberec, and Northern, Eastern, and Central Bohemia have been affected by the blackout, causing trains to stop on several railway lines.
At least five of the country’s 14 regions have been impacted.
Of the eight damaged stations, power has been restored to five so far, but parts of northern Prague remain without electricity. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has described the situation as “extraordinary” and stated that all responsible authorities are working to restore power. Meanwhile, the Polish power grid operator has announced that the incident has not affected their system, and the Czech Republic has not requested any assistance.
