Pakistani border guards have temporarily closed the Torkham crossing, which was previously only open for the deportation of Afghan migrants. The vital border point has been shut down for two days in observance of the Ashura religious holidays.
Local sources indicate that the crossing is scheduled to reopen on Saturday exclusively for the return of deported migrants. Torkham has remained strictly closed to general travel and commercial trade following fierce border clashes between Taliban forces and the Pakistani military last year.
Pakistani officials have not yet released a formal public statement regarding this sudden temporary closure. Despite multiple rounds of intense negotiations between both sides, a comprehensive agreement to fully reopen the crossing for trade remains elusive.
