The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that in the first half of 2025, nearly 23 million people, including approximately 12 million children in Afghanistan, need humanitarian assistance.

According to a report released on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, from January 1 to June 29, 2025, more than 19 million people in Afghanistan have gained access to basic health services, and more than 9.5 million children have been screened for malnutrition.

Additionally, more than 730,000 children and caregivers have received prevention, risk reduction, and support services in the field of child protection, with 59 percent of these individuals being children themselves.

UNICEF has also reported that political developments in Pakistan and Iran have exacerbated the crisis of returning Afghan refugees, and from January 1 to June 29, more than 714,000 migrants have returned from Iran, with 99 percent of them undocumented and 70 percent forcibly returned.
