Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, leader of the Islamic Party whose activities have been banned by the Taliban group, has condemned the display of a man’s body in Herat city.
In a post on X social media platform, Hekmatyar emphasized that killing or punishing individuals after they have left the battlefield is not permissible in Islam, and any ruler who exceeds these limits is “responsible and guilty.”
According to the Islamic Party leader, fighting against “rebels” in Islam is only legitimate as long as they are on the battlefield.
He clarified that if someone “leaves the trench, flees, or abandons rebellion,” neither pursuing nor killing them for past crimes is justified. Hekmatyar also stated that mutilation, disrespect to the deceased, or hanging bodies lacks legitimacy.
These statements were made following the Taliban group’s action on Friday, August 22, 2025, when they killed a man named “Dawood” on charges of membership in an opposition group and paraded his body through Herat city tied to a Ranger vehicle.
This comes at a time when relations between Hekmatyar and the Taliban group have severely deteriorated in recent months, with the Taliban declaring the Islamic Party’s activities prohibited.
