Based on the decision of the Taliban’s Dar al-Ifta, including women’s photos in identity cards has become optional.
This action was taken following the directive of Mulla Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban leader, and the National Statistics and Information Administration announced that in cases of urgent necessity, women can include their photos in identity cards.
Afghan women protested this Taliban action and described it as an attempt to erase women’s identity by this group.
Several Afghan women activists have shown their protest against this decision with the slogan “My photo, my identity”.
This comes while in the second half of the 1990s, during the Taliban’s first rule, women’s and girls’ identity cards lacked photos. This decision has provoked reactions from many Afghan citizens, especially women.
