Adam Boehler, Donald Trump’s representative for hostage affairs, arrived in Kabul on Saturday in an unexpected visit and met with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s foreign minister.
Zalmay Khalilzad, former US representative for Afghanistan, is also accompanying Boehler on this mission.
The meeting discussed prisoners from both countries, ways to expand bilateral relations, citizen-related issues, and investment opportunities.
Muttaqi stated that a suitable opportunity has now emerged for relations to return to normal and that no complex issues exist that would be difficult to resolve.
The United States has repeatedly asked the Taliban to release American hostages, particularly Mahmudshah Habibi.
Habibi, an Afghan-American citizen, was arrested in 2022 on charges of cooperating in identifying the safe location of al-Qaeda leader al-Zawahiri in Kabul.
