In its “World Report 2026,” Human Rights Watch (HRW) reveals that the Taliban have escalated their repression of Afghan women and girls over the past year. The report details new draconian laws that further restrict freedom of movement and access to public spaces, actions that UN experts describe as “gender apartheid.”
The humanitarian crisis has deepened due to drastic cuts in foreign aid and the forced repatriation of millions of refugees. HRW highlights that over 22 million Afghans face food insecurity, with women and girls disproportionately affected by the economic collapse and social restrictions.
HRW urges governments to pressure the Taliban to end these abuses while maintaining humanitarian support. The report also notes the significance of the International Criminal Court issuing arrest warrants for Taliban leaders for crimes against humanity, marking a historic step toward accountability.
