The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced on Saturday, October 11, that Afghanistan’s education system faces enormous challenges, but opportunities for reconstruction remain.
The international organization called education vital for every girl and boy and emphasized lifting the ban on girls’ education.
According to UNICEF and UNESCO reports, more than 2.13 million primary school-age children are deprived of education, and over 90 percent of ten-year-old children cannot read simple texts.
The Taliban group’s ban on secondary education for girls has deprived more than 2.2 million teenage girls of attending school.
UNICEF warned that if this ban continues, four million more girls will be deprived of education by 2030, resulting in economic losses of approximately \$9.6 billion for the country.
The organization has called on the international community to increase investment in primary education programs.
