Former Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani expressed deep sorrow over casualties and damages from Sunday night’s earthquake in northern Afghanistan.

He emphasized the importance of merchants’ assistance to earthquake victims while simultaneously accusing the United Nations of lacking transparency in aid distribution processes.

Mr. Ghani wrote on his Facebook page that the generous help from all compatriots shows they have not separated from their principles.

He identified recurring natural disasters, return of 2.6 million refugees from Iran and Pakistan, and closure of border crossings with Pakistan as serious problems facing the country.

The former president questioned the UN’s performance in providing aid to Afghanistan, stating the organization has never clarified how much assistance goes to administrative costs versus reaching people.

He also called on the Taliban group to share transparent reports of revenues and expenses from ports, particularly Hairatan and Aqina, with the public.
