Reporters Without Borders (RSF) announced that the Taliban group is suppressing Afghan journalists by using forced confessions.

According to the organization’s report published on Tuesday, November 4th, the Taliban forced Mahdi Ansari, a journalist from Afghan news agency, to make a forced confession after arresting him on charges of producing “anti-Taliban propaganda”.

Reporters Without Borders has called for the immediate release of Mahdi Ansari and six other journalists who have been illegally detained by the Taliban group.

The report states that the Taliban published a video of Ansari’s forced confession on the “Voice of Hindukush” Facebook page, affiliated with the group’s General Directorate of Intelligence.

Reporters Without Borders emphasized that this action is part of a strategy to create fear and limit independent reporting by the Taliban group’s intelligence services.

Since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, Afghanistan’s media environment has been severely restricted, with at least 165 journalists detained and tortured by the group under various pretexts.
