Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, warned that the uncontrolled flow of advanced weapons to terrorist groups based in Afghanistan has become a direct and growing threat to regional security.
He told the Security Council meeting on small arms that Islamabad is deeply concerned about the current situation in Afghanistan.
Iftikhar Ahmad emphasized that the presence of advanced weapons and ammunition stockpiles in Afghanistan poses a direct threat to neighboring countries.
He added that credible information exists showing efforts to smuggle these weapons to neighboring countries for terrorist activities are underway.
The Pakistani representative, referring to groups like ISIS Khorasan and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, said these groups have carried out deadly attacks against civilians and Pakistani security forces using these same weapons.
This comes as Taliban group and Pakistan negotiations ended without results late last week.
