Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan, responded to the attack on the US National Guard by an Afghan citizen, stating that punishing the entire Afghan community for the actions of one individual is “deeply unfair and completely meaningless.

” Supporting the statement by Shawn Van Diver, head of Afghan Evac, Bennett said, “The perpetrator must be held accountable, but the whole Afghan community should not be punished for the actions of one person”.

Shawn Van Diver had earlier emphasized that only the attacker is responsible for the crime and that it should not be generalized to all Afghan refugees. He called for a fair and fact-based investigation by US security agencies.

These remarks come after the US Citizenship and Immigration Services indefinitely suspended processing Afghan immigration applications following the incident. The decision has sparked significant reactions.
