A new report from Germany’s federal police shows that newly arrived Afghan and Syrian migrants who have not yet been accepted have a higher share in violent crimes and murders compared to German citizens.
According to the report, for every 100,000 Germans, there are 163 violent crime cases, while the figure is 1,722 for Afghans and 1,740 for Syrians. However, in 2024, crimes involving migrants dropped by more than 3 percent.
The report clarifies that these migrants are those with unclear residency status and do not include regular refugees, skilled workers, or students.
Afghan and Syrian suspects are also overrepresented in sexual and drug-related crimes compared to their share among all migrants. In contrast, Ukrainians are underrepresented among suspects relative to their population.
Germany’s interior minister stated that those who work and follow the law have the right to stay, but those considered a security threat will be returned.
Germany remains one of the main European destinations for Afghan and Syrian asylum seekers.
